What you need to know before booking and MOT
Booking an MOT is a straightforward process, but knowing a few key points in advance can make it even easier. Before booking your MOT, it's good to check when your vehicle’s MOT is actually due, as driving without a valid MOT can lead to penalties.
When you book your appointment, ensure you have your vehicle’s registration details handy, as these will be required. It’s also helpful to decide whether you’d like an MOT-only appointment or a combined MOT with a service. Finally, try to book early, especially around peak times like the end of the month, to secure your preferred time slot at a nearby Kwik Fit centre.
The cost of an MOT & what is involved
At Kwik Fit, we offer comprehensive MOT testing services for vehicles across the UK, likely at your local Kwik Fit centre. The cost of an MOT is capped at £54.85 for cars and caravans, and is essential ensuring that a vehicle meets legal safety and environmental standards. As we have already touched on, this test involves a thorough check of key vehicle components, whereby any defects that show up are categorised as minor, major, or dangerous - major and dangerous issues require immediate repair to pass the MOT. You can also check out our handy MOT checker tool to find out when your next MOT is.
What to expect on the day of you MOT
On the day of your MOT, it's important to arrive at your chosen MOT centre in good time. It is recommended that you arrive around 5-10 minutes before to allow for the technician to check you in and confirm your booking details. The MOT itself usually takes around 45 minutes to an hour, during this time, a certified tester will inspect key areas of your vehicle, including lights, brakes, tires, and emissions, to ensure it meets safety standards.
Once the test is complete, the technician will inform you of the results. If your vehicle passes, you’ll receive a new MOT certificate. If any issues arise, the technician will explain the findings and recommend next steps to get your car back on the road safely.
What happens if your vehicle fails its MOT?
If your vehicle fails its MOT, meaning your vehicle doesn’t meet the required safety or environmental standards set out by the DVSA, the MOT tester will provide a list of reasons for the failure. You will also receive a "Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate," which details the issues that need fixing. At Kwik Fit, our expert technicians can perform many of the necessary repairs on-site, often allowing you to quickly book a retest and get your vehicle back as soon as possible.
If you choose to get the repairs and retests done at the same centre, the retest will be free within 10 working days ensuring a smooth and efficient process to get your vehicle back on the road.
Can I check the MOT history of a car?
If you’re planning to buy a vehicle, or want to check the MOT history of your current vehicle, regardless of its age, you can check the MOT history as well as getting current and past copies of certificates. For cars, motorcycles, and vans, you can only obtain MOT test results from 2005 onwards. For larger vehicles, such as HGVs and coaches, results start from 2018.
The cost of neglecting your vehicle
Keeping your car well-maintained, and most importantly, safe on the road not only prevents future headaches but also saves money. While an MOT test isn’t overly expensive, failing one due to neglected upkeep can be. Simple checks like monitoring tyre pressure, oil levels, and warning lights can help avoid issues that might otherwise escalate into costly repairs.
Prioritising regular servicing is a smart way to keep your vehicle running smoothly and to prevent expensive fixes. At Kwik Fit, we offer a Kwik Fit Club subscription, you can easily bundle your servicing and tyre needs into a convenient, affordable subscription, making car care straightforward and budget-friendly.
Can you combine your MOT with a service?
Yes, you can easily combine your MOT with a service at Kwik Fit. By scheduling both at the same time, you save time and ensure your vehicle is thoroughly checked in one visit. Combining an MOT with a service also helps address any issues identified during the MOT, potentially avoiding future repairs. Plus, regular servicing ensures your vehicle remains safe, helping it stay in shape and reducing the chance of failing future MOTs. At Kwik Fit, we offer tailored service packages to meet your needs, making car care straightforward and hassle-free.
