Why good windscreen wipers matter
Your windscreen wipers are essential to safe driving - clearing rain and dirt from your windscreen and ensuring you can see the road ahead (and behind) clearly. Like many automotive parts, wiper blades deteriorate over time and should be checked regularly.
During the winter months, dirt from wet and sleety roads is propelled into the air by the tyres of passing vehicles or the car in front, making visibility very difficult in a short space of time.
While the summer months generally see less inclement weather, this can lead to an accumulation of dry dirt and dust, and your view can be obscured due to a build-up of bugs hitting the windscreen, particularly when driving at speed on motorways.
If your windscreen wipers are no longer working effectively, don’t leave them until another downpour severely reduces your visibility, call into your local Kwik Fit.
When to replace your windscreen wipers
We generally recommend that you replace your wiper blades every 12 months to ensure they continue to provide maximum visibility. However, if your windscreen wipers exhibit any of the following behaviours, it may suggest you have a problem, and that you should get your windscreen wipers checked out:
Wiper blades leave streaks on the windscreen
Some parts of the windscreen are left wet and dirty
Wiper blades have visible cracks and splits in the rubber edge or ‘squeegee’
Wiper blade is not making contact with the windscreen
Wipers judder and no longer move smoothly over the windscreen
Wipers make a lot of noise and squeal when they pass over the windscreen
Ineffective windscreen wipers can result in an MOT failure, so make sure you check and replace your damaged wipers before taking your MOT test.

Windscreen wiper FAQs
If you have more questions about your windscreen wipers, find your query below for an answer straight from our experts.
Your car’s windscreen wiper blades should last 12 months, after which time we recommend that you get them replaced. If your wipers are making excessive noise when in operation or are leaving streaks, you should replace them as soon as you can.
While both options are good choices as an automotive part — especially if purchased from reputable brands like Bosch — silicone windscreen wiper blades do tend to last longer than rubber ones and offer greater resilience to sustained use and exposure to the elements.
Typically, the entire windscreen wiper blade is replaced rather than just the rubber as this guarantees higher performance (as sometimes the wiper’s plastic components can go brittle over time).
No, windscreen wipers can be very fiddly to replace and may require multiple tries to get the perfect snug fit. There are numerous different fitting types, too which complicates things further. While windscreen wipers can be fitted by yourself at home, there is always the risk of accidental damage while fitting, so we recommend you leave it to the experts for peace of mind and a quick end-to-end process.
